Consequently, the cartridge was never adopted by any of the major commercial ammunition producers, although custom ammunition producers listed it, loaded with Starline brass. Dan Wesson did commence chambering their 8” barrelled, heavy frame revolver for it in 2000, the numbers were small, due to lack of demand and terminated by their Chapter 11 bankruptcy. They also offered ‘factory’ .414 Super Mag ammunition, based upon Starline cases topped with a 220-grain TC bullet, now highly collectable itself. Thompson Center were the only other manufacturer to catalogue the calibre, offering various lengths of chambered barrel for their single-shot T/C Contender. A revolver designed for the .414 SuperMag can also fire the shorter .41 Magnum and the .41 Special cartridges.

The post 414 SuperMag first appeared on Black Dog Ammunition.

The 375 SuperMag is something quite different. It was developed for metallic silhouette shooting by IHMSA president and famous big-game hunter Elgin Gates. Originally factory brass was available, but the supply for the most part has dried up and now brass is made using the 375 Winchester brass. It must be cut to 1.610″ and then run thru a sizing die and trimmed.

The .375 Super Mag is something quite different. It was developed for metallic silhouette shooting by IHMSA president and famous big-game hunter Elgin Gates. This “factory wildcat” consists of the .375 Winchester Big Bore rifle cartridge case shortened from its original 2.020 inches down to 1.6 inches for more efficient use in a handgun. The theory behind this cartridge was that one could have a cartridge that was ballistically somewhat more powerful than the .44 Magnum (the favorite in IHMSA’s revolver class) that would fire a bullet of better aerodynamic characteristics and greater sectional density. Such a bullet would give superior downrange ballistics coupled with a longer “hang time” on the silhouettes than the .44 Magnum. The .375 Super Mag was first developed using a Contender barrel; Gates subsequently persuaded Dan Wesson and United Sporting Arms to chamber revolvers for this cartridge, thus bestowing a degree of legitimacy on the wildcat kitten.

The post 375 Supermag first appeared on Black Dog Ammunition.

The 357 Maximum, formally known as the.357 Remington Maximum or the.357 Max, is a super magnum handgun cartridge originally developed by Elgin Gates as the wildcat.357 SuperMag. The.357 Maximum was introduced into commercial production as a joint-venture by Remington Arms Company and Ruger in 1983 as a new chambering for the Ruger Blackhawk. Shortly thereafter, Dan Wesson Firearms and Thompson/Center Arms introduced firearms in this cartridge. United Sporting Arms chambered it in their Silhouette series single-action revolvers. It is a.357 Magnum case lengthened 0.300 inches. Based on the.357 Magnum cartridge, a revolver or single-shot pistol designed for the.357 Remington Maximum will chamber and fire.357 Magnum, .38 Special, .38 Long Colt, and.38 Short Colt rounds. Intended primarily as a silhouette cartridge, such high velocity and energy levels have hunting applications. SAAMI pressure level for this cartridge is set at 40,000 pounds per square inch.

The post 357 Maximum first appeared on Black Dog Ammunition.
